Professor Elisheva Baumgarten

Elisheva Baumgarten is the Yitzchak Becker professor of Jewish Studies and teaches in the departments of History and Jewish History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Her work focuses on the social history of the Jews of medieval northern Europe with an emphasis on gender and religion. She is the author of “Practicing Piety in Medieval Ashkenaz: Men, Women, and Everyday Religious Observance” as well as “Mothers and Children: Jewish Family Life in Medieval Europe”. Professor Baumgarten has held fellowships at IAS in Princeton, the University of Pennsylvania, EHESS in Paris and at other institutions.
